Peak horsepower sells tunes, but usable power wins races. Here's why torque curves and power delivery matter more than headline figures.

Most drivers chase peak horsepower like it's the holy grail of performance. Shouting their peak figure like 'I've got the biggest willy'
But here's the truth: peak HP is just a number, and often a misleading one. What really matters is how much power your engine delivers across the rev range—and how usable that power is in real-world driving.
Let’s say your tune pushes peak HP from 180 to 220. Impressive, right? But if that gain only exists at 6,500 RPM and your daily driving rarely goes past 4,000, you’re not actually feeling the benefit. Instead, look at the torque curve. A flatter, broader torque band means stronger acceleration, better throttle response, and more usable grunt where it counts.
Dyno graphs tell the story. A tune that shifts the torque peak lower and broadens the curve will feel faster—even if the peak HP gain is modest. That’s why I focus on area under the curve, not just the tip of the iceberg.
When tuning, I prioritize:
Peak HP might win the spec sheet battle, but usable power wins every time on the road. Don’t fall for the headline—read the graph.
